I was alerted to this video by Ben Swank's Twitter, @VietnamSummer, on Friday. Me being a self-professed White Stripes super-fan, I kind of freaked out. Here's the video:
I had never thought of "Effect & Cause" as being a protest song, more of just a song about a relationship with some problems. But Congresswoman Donna Edwards makes me realize that it can really be put into practically any context- "you can't take the effect & make it the cause."
Just think of how much good the White Stripes could be doing now! If only they hadn't broken up...
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Congresswoman Donna Edwards makes a great point & what a great delivery! It's really admirable seeing someone holding the floor & making a point in such a unique and powerful manner. It is also great seeing how she interpreted the lyrics through the political lens because what we were dealing with (and most often are dealing with) in terms of politics is problem solving. I think her addressing the Cause/Effect scenario that is identified in the lyrics also strongly highlighted that standpoint.
ReplyDeleteShe's my hero.
